I’ve written before about what Claude Code gets wrong: mock data that drifts, features nobody asked for, scope that expands when you’re not looking. But after several weeks of building prototypes and design systems, the patterns that worried me most weren’t the AI’s. They were mine.
The quick loop
Ask Claude to build something. Review the preview. Adjust. Ask again. The cycle takes minutes, sometimes seconds. You can iterate on a component ten times before lunch.
The problem is what disappears in that speed. When I used to build things by hand, even just dragging layers in Figma, there was dead time. Time where my hands were doing mechanical work and my mind was wandering. That wandering is where lateral ideas come from. You notice a pattern from a different project. You remember a conversation with a stakeholder that reframes the whole page. You think of an alternative approach nobody discussed in the sprint.
With the quick loop, that time is gone. You’re always reviewing. Always evaluating output. When was the last time you stared at a screen and thought about nothing in particular? The craft still happens, but the creative thinking around it doesn’t, because you never have a moment where your attention is free.
I noticed it when I realised I hadn’t had a single “what if we tried something completely different” thought in three days. Every iteration was a refinement of the first direction. The loop was so tight that divergent thinking never had space to enter.
The fix is embarrassingly low-tech. Ask Claude for the build. Wait for the preview. Then don’t look at it immediately. Go make coffee. Walk around. Read something unrelated. Let your mind do the thing it does when it’s not being asked to evaluate. I started doing this deliberately: stepping away for ten or fifteen minutes after every major generation, and the quality of my feedback changed. Not because I was more careful with my reviews, but because I showed up with ideas I wouldn’t have had if I’d stayed in the loop.
The noise trap
Claude over-generates. You ask for a dashboard with three KPI cards and a table. You get the dashboard, the cards, the table, plus a notification bell, an export-to-CSV button, a settings gear icon, and a tooltip system. Each one works. Each one looks reasonable in context.
The trap is that it feels like progress. The prototype is growing. Features are appearing. But you didn’t ask for any of them, and none of them were in the sprint decisions. What’s happening is accumulation, not design.
I caught myself defending one of these ghost features to a colleague. She asked when we’d decided the prototype needed this option. We hadn’t. Claude built it, I got used to seeing it, and somewhere in my head it became a feature rather than noise.
The solution has two parts. First, make space between generating and evaluating. Don’t assess what Claude built in the same session you asked for it. Come back after some time. The features that aren’t earning their place become obvious when you haven’t been watching them accumulate in real time.
Second, a single question: does this contribute to the primary case? Not “is it well-built” or “could users want this.” Does it support the specific thing this prototype is supposed to test? If not, cut it. Doesn’t matter how polished it is. I’ve deleted entire working pages that Claude built beautifully but that had nothing to do with the sprint decisions I was validating.
The pixel trap
A 2px shadow that’s slightly off. A border-radius that doesn’t match the token. Spacing between two elements that’s 12px instead of 16px. Each fix takes seconds with Claude. You describe the problem, Claude fixes it, you move on. So you do thirty of them in a morning.
Once I’ve been adjusting small visual elements across a few pages. Fixed padding in a sidebar. Aligned a set of icons that were 1px off. Hours of micro-corrections, and I hadn’t once asked whether the sidebar belonged on that page at all.
How did three hours disappear? The pixel trap works because each individual fix is so cheap that it never feels like you’re spending time. There’s no moment where you decide “I’m going to spend the afternoon on spacing.” It just happens, one tiny fix at a time, until the morning is gone.
What helped was building audit agents into the project template. Instead of fixing visual inconsistencies as I spot them, I batch them. The audit agent runs at the end of a wave, catches the spacing issues, the shadow mismatches, the border-radius drift. They get fixed in one pass.
That freed me to spend the actual working sessions on the questions that matter. Does this layout communicate the right priority? Is the user going to understand what to do here? Would this still work with different data? Those are the questions I’m supposed to be asking. The 2px shadow can wait.
All three traps have the same root. The tool removed friction, and friction was doing more work than I’d realised. The slow parts of building the manual work, the overnight gap between sessions, the cost of making a change, weren’t just overhead. They were creating space for thinking, filtering against noise, and forcing you to choose where to spend your time. Take all of that away and you have to rebuild those boundaries yourself. Deliberately. Every session.
